Summer is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy some extra time with your dog. The good news is that training doesn't always have to look like a formal lesson. In fact, some of the best training happens when dogs and their owners are simply having fun together.

Here are five easy training games you can play in your backyard, at the cottage, or during a trip to the park this summer.

1. Recall Races

A reliable recall could be one of the most important skills your dog ever learns.

Have two family members stand 20-30 feet apart and take turns calling the dog. When your dog comes, reward them with praise, treats, or a favourite toy. As your dog improves, gradually increase the distance or add distractions.

The goal is to make coming when called the most rewarding thing your dog can do.

2. Hide and Seek

Dogs love using their noses and natural problem-solving abilities.

Have your dog stay while you hide somewhere nearby. Once hidden, call them and let them search for you. Start easy and gradually make the hiding spots more challenging.

This game builds confidence, strengthens recall, and gives your dog valuable mental stimulation.

3. Backyard Obstacle Course

You don't need fancy equipment to create a fun challenge.

Use lawn chairs, pool noodles, buckets, picnic tables, or other safe household items to create obstacles. Guide your dog over, around, and through the course while rewarding calm, confident participation.

Obstacle courses help improve focus, body awareness, and confidence while burning energy in a productive way.

4. Place Challenge

The "place" command teaches a dog to settle calmly on a designated bed, mat, or platform.

Turn it into a game by sending your dog to place while family members walk around, toss a ball, or create other distractions. Reward your dog for remaining calm and holding position.

This exercise develops impulse control and reinforces valuable household manners.

5. Find It

Take a handful of treats and scatter them in the grass, or hide them around the yard for your dog to locate.

You can also hide a favourite toy and encourage your dog to search for it. Scent-based activities tap into a dog's natural instincts and provide excellent mental exercise.

Many dogs are pleasantly tired after ten minutes of scent work.

More Than Just Fun

Training games do more than entertain your dog. They build confidence, improve communication, strengthen obedience skills, and create opportunities for owners and dogs to work together as a team.

A few minutes of purposeful training each day can make a significant difference in your dog's behaviour and your relationship with them.

Enjoy the summer, have fun, and remember that every interaction with your dog is a training opportunity.
